LEE'S SUMMIT - The Missouri Department of Transportation will halt temporary lane closures throughout the Kansas City area this weekend to accommodate an increase in traffic due to the Labor Day holiday. Work will stop at noon on Friday and resume Tuesday morning. Some long-term lane and bridge closures will remain. "Our lane closures on I-70 as part of the I-435 interchange improvement project will remain in place, but most temporary lane reductions elsewhere will be suspended through the long weekend," said Perry Allen, Kansas City District Construction and Materials Engineer. Even though the majority of highway work is stopping for the weekend, motorists should remain alert and drive smart to ensure safe travel. There are also routes still affected by flooding, including I-29 which is closed at Rock Port. Missouri partnered with Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska to create a regional detour that can be found on MoDOT's website at www.modot.org/flooding. It also provides information on the latest road closures with a link to the Traveler Information Map to help motorists plan their route. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration also will aggressively pursue drunk drivers this weekend as part of their "Drive Sober, or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
