LAWSON-The replacement of a box culvert on Route 69 south of Lawson in Clay County experienced unexpected shifting of the wing walls that tie into the culvert last month requiring the Missouri Department of Transportation to extend the closure. The road is expected to reopen to traffic by Friday, May 25 in time for Memorial Day weekend. Although the road will be open to traffic, lanes could be restricted to allow the crew to finish improvements. This work is weather dependent.
The large box culvert, built in 1955, is being replaced as part of the Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program and carries approximately 7,000 vehicles per day. The signed detour will stay in place, sending motorists around the closure using Route PP, I-35 and Route 92.
The Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program began in 2009 and will replace or rehabilitate 802 of Missouri's worst state bridges. 159 will be done in the Kansas City District. Currently, the district has finished 146 bridges with the remaining 13 bridges scheduled for this year. Ten of those bridges will be done in Clay County, with only four remaining.
