MoDOT Has Obligated All Recovery Act Funds for Transit, Aviation and Port Projects

JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Department of Transportation has fully obligated $30.7 million it received in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for MoDOT-administered public transportation, airport and river port projects ahead of schedule.

As set by ARRA guidelines, the final deadline for state departments of transportation to obligate (or commit funds to a specific project) economic stimulus funds for these projects is today, March 5.

"We worked diligently with the Federal Transit Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration to make sure MoDOT would use every cent of ARRA funding available to enhance multimodal services and facilities across Missouri," said Brian Weiler, director of MoDOT's Multimodal Operations.  "We are pleased that these funds have not only been fully obligated, but that much of the money has already been put to work to upgrade rural and intercity transit vehicles and facilities and to make improvements at public ports and airports."

ARRA funds have helped MoDOT's Multimodal Division fund several transit, aviation and port projects.  More than $20 million was invested in public transportation:

  • 315 rural transit vehicles have been purchased and delivered
  • six intercity buses for Missouri routes have been purchased, four are delivered
  • five transit facilities are being improved (located in Mississippi and Stoddard counties and in the cities of Marshfield, Macon and Poplar Bluff)

More than $5 million was used to make improvements at four smaller Missouri airports.  All projects are complete, including:

  • a runway rehabilitation at Sikeston Municipal Airport
  • construction or rehabilitation of aircraft aprons at the Warrensburg Skyhaven, Cape Girardeau Regional and Washington Regional airports

More than $4 million is being invested in five port projects, which are all currently under construction.  Projects include:

  • improvements on the municipal dock at St. Louis City Port
  • construction of a high-water rail line at Southeast Missouri Regional Port in Cape Girardeau County
  • site development and dock/dolphin (moorings) construction at New Bourbon Regional Port
  • construction of a rail extension at New Madrid County Port
  • construction of a truck staging area at St. Joseph Regional Port

MoDOT also received $31 million in high-speed rail grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in January.  Those grants are funding three shovel-ready projects that will increase reliability, speed and safety on the St. Louis to Kansas City rail corridor, as well as preliminary engineering on six future improvement projects.  The department is working with Union Pacific to get these projects under way.
